I did some work years ago in defining the basic elements for online collaboration and contributions -- I called this framework "The 12 Principles of Civilization".
What thoroughness and thoughtfulness Cynthia! You had this figured out 7 years ago. A question: what would you suggest we do and change to make this site vibrant and live up to its promise?
I've got a few suggestions regarding the site. I haven't seen anything with this focus before and if we get the right people here it could be a great resource.
The key is to bring in people that are doing innovation in this space. I will contact the people I know and invite them to participate, but also contacting bloggers in social networking & social software would be a great mechanism to publicize this new wiki. And VCs that are investing in companies that are built upon user contributions (of all types).
Perhaps adding sections that relate to each of the 12 Principles (or your version of them) would be helpful. For example, a section on Reputation specifically would be very useful.
There are a number of academics who are researching this space intensively. Paul Resnick at Univ. of Michigan is one of them.
My current area of interest and expertise is in financial rewards for contributions. I haven't figured out how to add that into your taxonomy.
A fantastic article about the power of peer pressure (which is just as effective online as offline) is "Applying (and Resisting) Peer Influence" published in the MIT Sloan Management Review Winter 2008. I'll add it to the resource section of the wiki. http://sloanreview.mit.edu/smr/issue/2008/winter/20/
[BTW - It's too bad that the full article is behind a payment system. That's a BIG problem for widespread dissemination of knowledge.]
I really agree on bringing together those who are studying and/or working in the space. I like your plans. Should I connect with Paul at Michigan? If so do you have his contact info? (Coincidentally I'm at Univ of Wisconsin at the moment.)
Hi Scott -- Here's Paul's university home page. http://www.si.umich.edu/~presnick/
I hope you can connect with him while you are there...what a coincidence!
