The Contribution Revolution

Contribution systems through history

Scott Ward just asked a great question:

Didn't the article on UCS miss an important point?  People have been making contributions for more than 160 years, long before the Internet age. One of the best volunteer contribution examples is Dun & Bradstreet, which gets “free” contributions from participating companies and then charges volunteers a fee for the service of getting their own information back. Wow, what a business model!

Answers to the question

I agree.  User contribution has been the basis for popular attractions and profitable businesses for more than a century.  Think talk radio, trade shows, the Olympics, county fairs, trade association conferences and CEO roundtables.   The internet has only multiplied the arenas where this natural phenomenon can happen.
